DIY Hibiscus & Flaxseed Hair Gel for Dry, Frizzy Hair

DIY Hibiscus & Flaxseed Hair Gel for Dry, Frizzy Hair

If your hair feels dry, tangles easily, looks frizzy, or seems to break before you can retain length, this simple hibiscus and flaxseed hair gel is a beautiful treatment to add to your routine.

Flaxseed creates a naturally slippery gel that coats the hair, while hibiscus has a long history of use in traditional hair-care preparations. Together, they make an inexpensive botanical treatment that can leave the hair feeling softer, smoother and easier to manage.

And the best part? You can make it right at home. 🌺

Why Flaxseed Gel Is So Good for Dry Hair

When flaxseeds are heated in water, they release mucilage, which creates the thick, slippery consistency you see in flaxseed gel.

That natural slip makes flaxseed gel especially useful for hair that is dry, curly, frizzy, tangled or prone to mechanical breakage.

Using flaxseed gel can help:

  • Improve softness and manageability
  • Provide slip for easier detangling
  • Reduce friction during styling
  • Control the appearance of frizz and flyaways
  • Support moisture retention
  • Define waves and curls
  • Help protect fragile hair from unnecessary mechanical breakage

And that last point matters if you’re trying to grow longer hair.

Sometimes your hair is growing, but you’re losing length because the ends are becoming dry, tangled and breaking. Supporting the hair you already have is an important part of retaining length.

Why Add Hibiscus? 🌺

Hibiscus has been used traditionally in hair and scalp preparations for generations.

The plant contains naturally occurring compounds including polyphenols, flavonoids, organic acids and pigments called anthocyanins.

There is also some interesting early research around hibiscus and hair growth. Extracts of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis have demonstrated hair-growth activity in preclinical research. That’s an important distinction.

I love botanical ingredients and DIY hair care. I believe making something with your own hands is one of the most beautiful ways to reconnect with nature, slow down, and create moments of calm for your nervous system—and caring for your overall well-being is part of caring for your hair, too.

But at Rooted Trēes, we also believe nature has given us incredibly powerful compounds that aren’t always practical—or even possible—to work with in a home kitchen. Some require specialized extraction, precise concentrations, stabilization, preservation, or professional formulation to be used effectively in a cosmetic product.

That’s where our formulas come in.

We bring together the botanical ingredients we love with specialized ingredients such as peptides and concentrated botanical extracts, creating professional formulas that give your scalp access to ingredients you simply can’t recreate by boiling a few herbs at home.

So we don’t believe you have to choose between DIY and professionally formulated hair care. There’s room for both.

Make the herbal rinse. Make the flaxseed gel. Infuse the rosemary oil. 🌿
Connect with nature and enjoy the ritual.

And when your hair and scalp need something beyond what you can realistically create at home, that’s what Rooted Trēes is here for. 🌱

DIY Hibiscus + Flaxseed Hair Gel Recipe

You’ll need:

  • ¼ cup whole flaxseeds
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Clean glass container or jar
  • Optional: Broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative — amount according to manufacturer’s recommended usage rate

Step 1: Infuse the hibiscus

Add the dried hibiscus flowers to the water and allow them to infuse until the water develops that beautiful deep reddish color.

Strain out the flowers.

Step 2: Add the flaxseed

Place your hibiscus infusion back into the pot and add the flaxseeds.

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly.

As it cooks, you’ll notice the water beginning to develop a slippery, gel-like consistency.

Step 3: Watch the consistency

Don’t wait until the mixture becomes extremely thick.

Flaxseed gel continues to thicken as it cools, and waiting too long can make it much harder to strain.

Once you see that characteristic gel forming and the liquid becomes slightly viscous, remove it from the heat.

Step 4: Strain

While the mixture is still warm, carefully strain out the flaxseeds.

Allow your finished gel to cool completely before using it on your hair.

Step 5: Add Your Preservative

Once the gel has cooled to the appropriate temperature for your chosen preservative, add the preservative at the manufacturer’s recommended usage rate and mix thoroughly until completely incorporated.

Because preservatives have different usage percentages, temperature requirements, and effective pH ranges, always follow the specifications for the specific preservative you’re using.

Can I Make It Without a Preservative?

Yes, but this is a fresh, water-based botanical preparation, so without an appropriate broad-spectrum preservative it has a very limited shelf life and should be refrigerated and made in small batches.

For a product you want to keep longer, I recommend using an appropriate cosmetic preservative rather than relying on refrigeration alone.

How to Use Hibiscus + Flaxseed Gel

You can apply a small amount to clean, damp hair, concentrating especially on your lengths and ends.

Use it as a natural styling gel to help with definition and frizz, or incorporate it into your routine when your hair needs additional softness and manageability.

Start with a small amount. You can always add more depending on your hair’s density, texture and length.

But What If Your Problem Isn’t Dry Hair?

This is where understanding what is actually happening to your hair becomes incredibly important.

Dryness, breakage, excessive shedding and progressive thinning can look similar when you’re finding hair everywhere or noticing that your hair isn’t as full as it used to be—but they’re not the same problem.

And treating all hair loss the same can leave you spending money on product after product without addressing what your hair and scalp actually need.

DIY Hair Care vs. Formulated Scalp Care

I love DIY hair care. It’s one of the reasons you’ll find so many botanical recipes here.

But there’s also an important distinction between conditioning the hair fiber and creating a targeted formula for the scalp.

Some cosmetic ingredients simply aren’t something you’re going to extract from a rosemary sprig or a hibiscus flower in your kitchen.

Peptides are a great example.

That’s why my own routine combines botanical DIY treatments with intentionally formulated scalp products.

The Rooted Trēes Peptide Growth Serum combines multiple peptides with ingredients such as rosemary extract, arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria and vitamin E in a leave-in scalp formula.

So you don’t have to choose between natural DIY hair care and advanced formulation.

They can have completely different jobs within the same routine.

Your Hair Doesn’t Need More Guessing

A beautiful hair routine doesn’t need twenty products.

It needs to make sense for your hair, your scalp and the problem you’re actually trying to solve.

Use this hibiscus + flaxseed gel when your lengths need some extra softness, slip and manageability.

And if you’re experiencing excessive shedding, thinning, loss of density or breakage and you’re not sure where to start, take the Rooted Trēes Hair & Scalp Quiz.

Because before buying another treatment, it’s worth asking a much more important question:

What does my hair actually need? 🌱
