Ayurvedic Hair Growth Tea: 7 Herbs to Nourish Your Hair From Within
When we talk about hair growth, most people immediately think about what they can apply to their scalp: rosemary oil, serums, masks, and treatments.
And while scalp care is important, there's another side of hair wellness that deserves just as much attention.
What are you feeding your hair follicles from within?
Hair follicles are among the most metabolically active structures in your skin. They depend on adequate protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals to produce healthy hair.
That's why I believe a good hair-care routine should go beyond what we apply to our scalp.
It should also include how we nourish our bodies.
This Ayurvedic-inspired herbal tea combines seven botanicals traditionally used in herbal wellness: hibiscus, amla, nettle, moringa, tulsi, ginger, and rose.
Each brings something different to the blend, from antioxidant compounds and naturally occurring nutrients to beautiful aromas and flavors.
And the result is a gorgeous, deep-red herbal infusion. 🌺
🌺 Ayurvedic Hair Growth Tea Recipe
Ingredients
To prepare your dry herbal blend, you'll need:
-
4 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers
-
3 tablespoons dried amla
-
2 tablespoons dried nettle leaf
-
2 tablespoons dried moringa leaf
-
1 tablespoon dried tulsi (holy basil)
-
1 tablespoon dried ginger
-
1 tablespoon dried rose petals
Combine all the dried herbs and store the mixture in a clean, airtight glass container away from sunlight, heat, and moisture.
How to Prepare Your Tea
For one serving:
-
Add 1–1½ tablespoons of the herbal blend to 12–16 oz of hot water.
-
Cover and steep for approximately 10–15 minutes.
-
Strain thoroughly.
-
Enjoy warm, or allow it to cool and serve over ice.
Hibiscus and amla naturally contribute tartness, while ginger adds warmth and rose softens the flavor.
If you prefer a sweeter infusion, add a little honey after steeping.
Now, let's explore why I chose these seven herbs.
🌺 Hibiscus: Antioxidants and Traditional Hair Care
Hibiscus is one of my favorite botanicals, both for herbal infusions and traditional hair preparations.
Its flowers contain naturally occurring compounds such as anthocyanins and other polyphenols.
These compounds are studied for their antioxidant properties.
Hibiscus has also attracted scientific interest for potential hair-related applications, although much of the research involving hair growth remains experimental.
That means we can't assume drinking hibiscus tea will stimulate new hair growth.
But it can be an enjoyable way to incorporate botanical compounds into a balanced diet.
And, of course, it gives this tea its beautiful ruby color.
🌿 Amla: A Botanical Rooted in Ayurvedic Tradition
Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, has been used in traditional Ayurvedic practices for generations.
It's especially well known for its association with hair and scalp care.
Amla contains polyphenols and other naturally occurring antioxidant compounds.
Researchers have investigated certain amla preparations for their potential relevance to hair wellness, but evidence that drinking amla tea reverses hair loss remains limited.
I love including it in this blend because it connects traditional herbal knowledge with modern interest in plant chemistry.
Its tart flavor also pairs beautifully with hibiscus.
🌱 Nettle: A Traditional Herb for Hair Wellness
Nettle is another botanical with a long history of traditional use.
Its leaves contain naturally occurring minerals, polyphenols, and other plant compounds.
Nettle is frequently included in herbal preparations associated with hair and scalp wellness.
But there's an important distinction.
Drinking nettle tea isn't the same as correcting an iron, zinc, or other nutritional deficiency.
The amounts of nutrients extracted into an infusion vary, and tea shouldn't replace appropriate dietary intake or treatment for a diagnosed deficiency.
Still, nettle is a wonderful botanical to explore as part of a varied herbal routine.
It's also one of the ingredients featured in our Rooted Trēes Rosemary Hair & Scalp Strengthening Oil, connecting traditional botanical care with our modern hair-care philosophy.
🌿 Moringa: Nutritional Support From Plants
Moringa leaves are valued for their nutritional composition.
They contain protein, carotenoids, polyphenols, and several vitamins and minerals.
Of course, the amount transferred into a cup of tea is different from the amount present in the whole leaf.
But moringa illustrates something I always emphasize when discussing hair growth:
Your body needs nutrients to produce hair.
Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein built from amino acids.
When the body isn't receiving adequate nutrition, hair growth and the normal hair cycle can be affected.
Moringa isn't a miracle hair-growth ingredient.
It's one botanical among many that can be incorporated into a balanced approach to nutrition.
🌿 Tulsi: Stress and the Hair-Growth Cycle
Tulsi, also called holy basil, is widely used in Ayurvedic herbal traditions.
It's often described as an adaptogenic herb because researchers have investigated its potential effects on stress-related outcomes.
Why does stress matter when we're talking about hair?
Because significant physical or emotional stress can sometimes disrupt the normal hair cycle.
One example is telogen effluvium, a type of excessive shedding that may occur several months after a stressful event, illness, or other physiological trigger.
However, drinking tulsi tea hasn't been proven to prevent or reverse stress-related hair loss.
I include tulsi because it adds another dimension to the ritual: taking time to slow down and enjoy something nourishing.
🫚 Ginger: A Warming Botanical
Ginger contains naturally occurring compounds such as gingerols.
These compounds have been investigated for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
But that doesn't mean ginger tea is a proven treatment for hair growth.
In this recipe, ginger contributes warmth and balances the tartness of hibiscus and amla.
It's a wonderful example of how botanical ingredients can bring both flavor and interesting plant chemistry to a recipe.
🌹 Rose: A Botanical Ritual Worth Enjoying
Rose petals contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds and polyphenols.
They've been used in traditional herbal preparations for generations.
But sometimes, the reason for including an ingredient doesn't need to be complicated.
Rose gives this tea a delicate aroma and helps balance the stronger herbal flavors.
And I believe that matters.
A wellness routine should be something you genuinely enjoy, not another obligation.
Can an Ayurvedic Herbal Tea Really Grow Your Hair?
This is where I want to make an important distinction.
Supporting your overall health and directly stimulating hair growth are not the same thing.
No single tea, herb, supplement, oil, or serum addresses every cause of hair loss.
Hair shedding and thinning can be associated with:
-
Nutritional deficiencies
-
Inadequate protein or calorie intake
-
Significant stress
-
Hormonal changes
-
Thyroid conditions
-
Postpartum changes
-
Illness
-
Certain medications
-
Genetics
-
Scalp conditions
-
Chemical, mechanical, or heat damage
That's why I always come back to the same question:
Why is your hair falling out?
Understanding the underlying cause is more useful than continuously switching between trending hair-growth remedies.
And while this herbal tea can be part of an enjoyable wellness routine, it shouldn't replace proper nutrition or medical evaluation when shedding is persistent or unexplained.
Support Your Hair From the Inside AND the Outside
I don't believe hair care needs to be either natural or science-based.
I believe the best approach combines both. 🌿
From within, we can focus on adequate protein, nutrient-rich foods, hydration, and overall well-being.
From the outside, we can choose thoughtfully formulated products that help maintain scalp cleanliness and protect our existing hair.
And that's where Rooted Trēes comes in.
Rosemary and Nettle: From Traditional Herbs to Modern Hair Care
Two of the botanicals I find particularly interesting are rosemary and nettle.
Both have long histories in traditional hair-care preparations.
Rosemary has also attracted scientific attention because of preliminary research investigating its potential effects on certain types of hair loss.
One small clinical study compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil over six months in individuals with androgenetic alopecia.
Both groups showed improvements in hair counts at six months, although the findings have limitations and don't establish that all rosemary products stimulate hair growth.
Nettle, meanwhile, remains an interesting botanical with a history of traditional use, but clinical evidence for topical hair regrowth is limited.
Botanical ingredients can be promising without being miracle treatments.
That's the perspective we bring to our formulations.
Meet Our Rooted Trēes Rosemary Hair & Scalp Strengthening Oil
Our Rosemary Hair & Scalp Strengthening Oil combines rosemary, nettle, peppermint, and complementary botanical oils in a formula designed for scalp and hair care.
Rather than promising overnight growth, our approach focuses on creating a consistent ritual that nourishes the scalp and improves the condition of your hair.
Why Incorporate It Into Your Routine?
-
Rosemary and nettle: Botanicals traditionally associated with hair and scalp care.
-
Nourishing plant oils: Help soften dry-feeling strands and improve manageability.
-
Scalp massage: Adds a gentle, relaxing step to your routine.
-
Hair conditioning: Helps improve shine and reduce friction during grooming.
-
Botanical care: Brings traditional plant ingredients into a modern cosmetic formula.
If you're concerned about fragile hair, protecting your existing strands from unnecessary breakage is an important part of maintaining fuller-looking hair.
And that's something a good conditioning routine can help address.
Don't Forget Your Shampoo and Conditioner
Even the most carefully selected scalp oil is only one part of a complete hair-care routine.
Your everyday shampoo and conditioner matter, too.
If your hair feels flat, heavy, or weighed down, your cleansing routine may need attention.
Our Rooted Trēes Strength & Volume Shampoo is designed to remove oil and buildup while leaving hair feeling lightweight and refreshed.
Follow with our Strength & Volume Conditioner, formulated with ingredients such as avocado oil, panthenol, and wheat protein to help improve softness, detangling, and manageability.
Together, they help support hair that looks fuller and feels easier to care for.
Because protecting the hair you already have is just as important as understanding how new hair grows.
My Simple Inside-Out Hair Wellness Ritual
You don't need an overwhelming routine.
You need consistency and an understanding of what your hair actually needs.

FROM THE OUTSIDE 🌿
Rooted Trēes Hair & Scalp Care
Build a routine around your hair's needs:
Strength & Volume Shampoo: Cleanse your scalp and remove buildup.
Strength & Volume Conditioner: Help soften and protect fragile strands.
Rosemary Hair & Scalp Strengthening Oil: Incorporate botanical scalp care and nourishing hair oiling.
Scalp Reset Exfoliator with Rosemary & Mint: Use occasionally to remove accumulated oil, dead skin cells, and product residue.
Keratin Shine Leave-In Hair Mist: Help smooth frizz, improve manageability, and protect the appearance of your lengths.
You don't need to use every product at every wash.
If your scalp tends to become oily, consider alternating your exfoliation and oiling treatments rather than using them together.
The goal is a routine that works for your scalp and hair type.
Natural Hair Care, Backed by Certified Standards
At Rooted Trēes, we believe botanical ingredients deserve more than beautiful marketing.
They deserve thoughtful formulation.
That's why our collection emphasizes natural-origin ingredients, modern cosmetic science, and recognized natural cosmetic standards.
Our COSMOS NATURAL-certified products reflect our commitment to formulation standards that go beyond simply placing the word natural on a label.
Certification doesn't guarantee hair regrowth or mean a product is suitable for every individual.
But it provides an additional level of transparency about the ingredients and formulation standards behind a cosmetic product.
Because natural hair care should be backed by standards, not just promises.
Healthy Hair Is an Inside-Out Journey
Hair growth is biological.
It depends on genetics, hormones, nutrition, and the normal functioning of your hair follicles.
But the way you care for your scalp and existing hair matters, too.
This Ayurvedic-inspired tea is one way to enjoy botanicals as part of your daily routine.
Our Rooted Trēes collection brings botanical ingredients into your external hair-care ritual.
Together, they reflect a philosophy I believe in:
Nourish your body. Care for your scalp. Protect your strands.
Because healthy-looking hair isn't about finding one miracle ingredient.
It's about understanding your hair and giving it consistent, thoughtful care.
